Pain in the low back or lumbosacral spine is one of the most common disorders, with more than 90% of people experiencing an episode at some stage during their life. Low back pain can result from injury to various structures including:
- Injuries to the sacroiliac joint or the SIJ
- Injury to the intervertebral discs or discs
- The low back muscles
Once you have an episode of low back pain it is likely to become recurrent back pain
Other sources of low back pain or low back injury may include:
- Nerve compression – this is often referred to as sciatica
- Arthritis or osteoarthritis
- Muscles
These structures are separate disorders and low back pain treatment should be customised according to the problem. For example the treatment for sciatica or nerve compression may require medical treatment as well as traditional physiotherapy treatments such as massage, mobilisation and exercises, whereas simple injuries to the disc are often managed well with physio. We can also supply back supports and back braces.
Coming soon we will be commencing low back pain exercise programs based on a proven program developed by Olympic Physiotherapist Trish Wisby-Roth. Known as “bounce-back” this effective low back exercise program is suitable for most types of low back pain particularly Sacroiliac Joint (SIJ) pain and injury, the lumbar facet joints pain (osteoarthritis) and the intervertebral discs or disc injury.
