Exercise Physiology

What is an Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP)?

An Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) is a university qualified professional that specialises in the delivery of exercise and lifestyle modification for people with a variety of health conditions, as well as for the healthy population.

AEPs study the effect of exercise on the body, the mechanisms by which exercise can reduce or reverse disease, improve muscular function, support optimal health and aid in recovery.

They prescribe exercise to individuals or groups to prevent, manage and treat health conditions and injuries in the same way a doctor might prescribe medication. Areas of treatment can include - but are not limited to - diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.

Their primary objective is to improve physical function, reduce symptoms, and enhance overall health and well-being. They may also provide education on lifestyle changes, such as nutrition and stress management, to help clients achieve their health goals.

Our AEP’s focus on your goals to tailor your program. What you can expect is a thorough assessment, management plan, and most importantly, it will help you improve your health and well-being and keep you doing the things you love.

AEPs provide support for people with:

Should I see a Physiotherapist or an Exercise Physiologist?

The answer to this question depends on your specific needs and health condition.

If you are experiencing pain or movement restrictions due to an acute injury or recent surgery, a Physiotherapist may be a better choice. Physiotherapists are trained to diagnose and treat musculoskeletal conditions, and they can provide manual therapy, exercise prescription, and other techniques to help you recover from your injury or manage your symptoms. They can also provide education on injury prevention and safe exercise practices to help you maintain your physical function and prevent future problems.

If you are looking to improve your overall health and fitness or manage a chronic injury or condition such as diabetes or obesity, an AEP may be a better choice. AEPs can design and implement individualised exercise programs that are tailored to your specific needs and health goals. They can also provide education on lifestyle modifications such as nutrition and stress management to help you achieve optimal health and well-being.

In some cases, you may benefit from seeing both a Physiotherapist AND an AEP. For example, if you have recently had surgery or experienced an injury, a Physiotherapist can help you recover your physical function, and an AEP can then help you regain your strength and fitness level. Similarly, if you have a chronic condition, you may benefit from seeing a Physiotherapist to address any pain or physical limitations associated with your condition and then an AEP to help you manage your symptoms.
